Your Inner Self – The Engine that Drives You

The most fascinating thing I find about people is that, even if they are not interested or are not aware of their deeper spiritual life, they are always trying to express it. We come into this life on kind of an automatic pilot that, if we listen to it and allow it to lead us, will help us manifest the life we most deeply desire. Numerology is one way to reveal that automatic pilot within us.

Your Inner Self is one of the core qualities in your spiritual makeup and is derived from the vowels in your birth name. It is the quality that drives you, that motivates you, and that permeates every facet of your awareness. It influences your perception and everything you do. It is so much a part of you that you may not be aware of it.

Some numerologists say that your Inner Self represents your greatest desire; that which you strive to accomplish in everything you do. I’d say that’s a pretty accurate description.

Finding Your Inner Self Number

To calculate your Inner Self number, you will need to use the Chaldean Conversion Code, below.

Chaldean Conversion Code

Print your birth name on a piece of paper. Next, place the number that corresponds to each vowel above that vowel in your name. Add all the numbers above the vowels in your first name together and write the sum above those numbers.

Now reduce that sum to a single digit, if necessary, and write it above the first sum. Do the same thing with your middle and last names. If you have a suffix like Junior or III after your name, calculate that in the same way. Spell out Junior.

Finally, add all the single-digit sums above each name together and reduce that sum to a single digit unless it is 11, 22, or 33, which are master numbers. Now you have your Inner Self number.

Brief Interpretations of the Inner Self Number

You will notice that there are positive and negative aspects to each number.

1          You want independence, you like action and accomplishment, and you are unique, creative, not one of the crowd. You are loyal and fair. You like to start things, but often get bored before you finish them. You can be impatient, bossy, arrogant, conceited, critical, selfish, and outspoken.

2          Your greatest desire is for peace and harmony. You are thoughtful, loving, devoted, and loyal; you love the comfort of a nice, soft chair and camaraderie with friends and loved ones. You tend to let people run over you because you crave peace at any price. You don’t tell people what you want if you think it might displease them. You tend to take everything personally.

3          You love to express yourself through speaking, writing, or acting. You love to be happy and love to make other people happy. You are an optimist and, if you worry, it’s not for long. You can be a drama king/queen. You are so versatile, you can end up scattering your energy in all directions with your fingers in too many pies.

4          You are a builder, and your greatest desire is for structure, steadiness, and routine. You are practical, analytical, reliable, orderly, dependable, and methodical. You can be inflexible, stubborn, a perfectionist, impatient with those you perceive as undisciplined or disorganized.

5          Your greatest desire is for freedom, and you avoid routine. You like variety, adventure, travel, new places, and new faces. You can be stubborn when you perceive others trying to limit your freedom. Excess of all kinds is a stumbling block for you.

6          Your greatest desire is to have love, justice, and harmony in the world. Home, family, and community are vital to you. You tend to become emotionally involved in other people’s troubles, worrying about them and creating stress for yourself.

7          You are curious and seek knowledge. You love mystery, and seek to understand the unknown whether in the field of science or metaphysics. You can be high strung and hard to get along with because you are sensitive to everything around you. You need to make time to be alone and decompress.

8          You love power, material possessions, and the feeling of accomplishment. You are a born leader, and you thrive in the director’s chair. You can be impatient, a tyrant, and a dictator when things don’t go your way.

9          Love for humanity drives you. You dream of helping mankind in a big way. You are the universal big sister or big brother. You can be impractical and indecisive.

11        You are inspired by the spiritual, but are not necessarily religious; you love to explore the unseen. You are idealistic and see the world full of beauty and infinite potential. You may love ideals more than people. You can be stubborn, hasty, and domineering.

22        You are driven by making dreams come true. You have high ideals with one foot in the physical and one in the spiritual world. You thrive on converting ideas into practical reality. Your desire for perfection can alienate people. You are susceptible to the down side of the number 4.

33        Love and service drive you. You desire that everyone know how magnificent they are. You can see the good in everyone, no matter what others may say or think. You tend to sacrifice yourself for others, creating difficulty in your own life.

When you are expressing a negative aspect of a number, it means that you are confused, not that you are bad or somehow lacking. You can use your negative expression as information telling you that you are treating yourself poorly in some way. It is an indication that it’s time to get back in balance.

This is a long post, but I hope it has been helpful to you. I welcome your questions and comments.

Live your purpose every day.

You Are Love

There is a part of you that loves everything and everyone. It even loves you – unconditionally. I call it your loving essence, and it is expressed through your unique personality, talents, and life purpose.

Your loving essence is often lost through programmed thinking and behavior, much of which is negative and stress-producing. If you look deep inside, you will find the loving essence that is there in every minute of every day.

When you are able to see through your programmed reactions to life, you discover your true self which is all loving, all the time. This doesn’t mean you are sweetness and light all the time. It means you are able to accept yourself just as you are. You can see your so-called imperfections and love yourself anyway. You experience that place inside that loves life, that is enthusiastic about everything, as you were when you were a child.

Your loving essence needs guidance, since it is all feelings. It needs your thoughts to direct it to full expression. Your loving essence is all power and energy, and contains the feelings that nudge you to the best expression of yourself. It is your inner world. Your thoughts give it direction and outer-world expression.

Wouldn’t it be great if we all could live in perfect balance between our loving essence and the outer expression of it? Maybe some day humankind can achieve that balance. Meanwhile, we can do our best to remember who we are and honor who we are; maybe only for a fleeting second or a few minutes in our day. But with practice, we can make it a habit, then a way of life.

Imagine living a life of honor; honoring who you are, just as you are. As you honor yourself, you honor others. As you do what is necessary to create a life of inner and outer fulfillment, you create an environment for your loved ones to do the same. You are a way-shower.

One way to begin is to make it a habit of remembering who you are. Think about these questions and try keeping them in the back of your mind; “What if I could love every minute of my life? What would that look like? What would that feel like?”

Your Chaldean Soul Chart, as illustrated in my book, You Were Born to Succeed: Finding Your Purpose through Numerology, can help you create a life you could love. If you are a person who is not sure of why you are here, your Chaldean Soul Chart can show you.

In my book, you can learn to find your purpose by calculating, in a unique and specific way, the numbers of your birth name and birth date. Automatically, you will identify with your chart because the information you uncover has been in the energy pattern of your soul since you were born.

Your inborn loving essence automatically comes forward when you access this information. Your loving essence is the propulsion system of your life purpose. If you stay in touch with your purpose, you can create a life worth loving.

Live your purpose every day.

I hope you had a happy day yesterday eating lots of good food and enjoying good times with family and friends. I offer these Thanksgiving quotes to make you smile.

George Carlin
We’re having something a little different this year for Thanksgiving. Instead of a turkey, we’re having a swan. You get more stuffing.

Ambrose Bierce, The Devil’s Dictionary
Turkey: A large bird whose flesh, when eaten on certain religious anniversaries has the peculiar property of attesting piety and gratitude.

Erma Bombeck, No One Diets on Thanksgiving
What we’re really talking about is a wonderful day set aside on the fourth Thursday of November when no one diets. I mean, why else would they call it Thanksgiving?

Russell Baker
It was dramatic to watch my grandmother decapitate a turkey with an ax the day before Thanksgiving. Nowadays the expense of hiring grandmothers for the ax work would probably qualify all turkeys so honored with ‘gourmet’ status.

Jon Stewart
I celebrated Thanksgiving in an old-fashioned way. I invited everyone in my neighborhood to my house, we had an enormous feast, and then I killed them and took their land.

Johnny Carson
Thanksgiving is an emotional holiday. People travel thousands of miles to be with people they only see once a year. And then discover once a year is way too often.

May your stuffing be tasty
May your turkey plump,
May your potatoes and gravy
Have nary a lump.
May your yams be delicious
And your pies take the prize,
And may your Thanksgiving dinner
Stay off your thighs!

How to Have Foolproof Communication with Your Spiritual Helpers

Last time, I told the story of how my guardian angels helped me quit smoking. They have always guided me toward the light. They have offered insightful and inspiring guidance on the most mundane matters and on the most difficult times I have faced. They celebrate the good times with me, too.

Today I want to share some ways I have learned to receive clear communication and how I have learned to know the difference between my spirit guides and my own thoughts.

If what I share today makes sense to you, use it. If not, put it on a shelf for later consideration or let it go. We all make the right choices at the right time.

I like to call them my guardian angels. Choose the name you prefer to call yours (spiritual helpers, board of directors, team, etc.) They don’t care what we call them, they just want to communicate.

Who Are They?

Your spiritual helpers are experts you have contracted with to accompany you through life. They have lived through every experience in your life and learned the lessons you have chosen this lifetime. Some say that you have known these souls in past lifetimes. Their purpose is to guide us, not to tell us what to do.

Getting in Tune

In order to communicate with them, you need to raise your vibration to their level. The first step is to clear your energy. I’m sure many of you have effective ways to do that. I’ll share again a  technique I use that you may want to adopt. It is simple, quick, and effective.

Stand or sit comfortably (you will be able to do this on the fly, as well, once you get the hang of it). Mentally say, “I invoke the light of the Christ within (or your name for the Creator), I’m a clear and perfect channel, light is my guide.” At the same time, visualize a point of white light in your solar plexus. Allow it to get bigger and bigger until it fills your body and envelops you in a bubble of white light.

Gently repeat the mantra and visualize the light until you feel goose bumps, chills, or a tingling sensation on your skin. This is the indication that you are on your guides’ wavelength and are close enough to feel the higher charge of electro-magnetic energy that emanates from them. When your energy meets their energy it causes these physical sensations.

It is helpful for some to add a physical action to this process. Rub your hands together to charge up your energy. As you repeat the mantra, pass your hands over the top of your head and down the back of your neck. Give them a little shake and pass them over your forehead and down the sides of your face. Shake your hands again and repeat the process as often as necessary.

How to Ask Questions

Let’s talk about yes-no questions first. It’s important to phrase the question in such a way that your helpers can offer an opinion or suggestion. Don’t ask if you should do something; they will not respond because they won’t tell you what to do. Ask their opinion, such as, “In your opinion, is it in the best interest of all concerned for me to … ?” Or, “Is it in my best interest to … ?” Or, “I have the impression that … . In your opinion, is this an accurate impression?”

For more detail, you can ask for an answer through one of your spiritual gifts; a picture, a feeling, or words. (See my posts on the four spiritual gifts). Simply stay relaxed and wait for the impression. This will take practice. Be patient with yourself. Stay tuned in to your body and make sure you can feel their presence in one of the ways mentioned above. If you lose contact, simply perform the clearing process again.

Establishing Your Signals, Asking the Question, and Verifying the Answer

You will need to be standing for this. Place your feet about 12” apart and perform the clearing process until you can feel the presence of your spiritual helpers. Your body will become a pendulum of sorts. You will be receiving “Yes” and “No” answers through the swaying of your body. You can close your eyes through this process or keep them open, whatever is most comfortable for you.

Establish your signals. Gently sway front to back an inch or two and say, “I want this to mean ‘yes’.” Now move your body left to right a couple of inches and say, “I want this to mean ‘no’.” Now center your body, make sure you are clear, and say, “Give me a ‘yes’.” Allow your body to be moved. Ask for a ‘no’ in the same way. Practice until you feel comfortable with the process. You only need to do this once.

Ask your question according to the directions above. To verify the answer to a question, relax and ask if the answer came from them. “Did that answer come from you?” You will feel your body sway in one direction or another. Then ask, “Did that answer come from me?” You will feel your body sway in the opposite direction if you are still clear.

Always verify your answers.

Respect the Process

This is an advanced communication technique. You are responsible to get and stay clear all through the process. If you fail to keep your energy tuned in to your guidance, you will get answers from entities who are confused. Then you will become confused. Spiritual practice requires discipline. It’s up to you to maintain the clarity that is necessary for success with this technique.

Meanwhile, congratulations! Your spiritual helpers are happy to be in closer contact with you.

Live your purpose every day.

Psychotherapy Can Be Fun

Albert Ellis is one of my favorite psychotherapists because he was a pioneer of self help. He developed Rational Emotive Therapy in the 1950s before anyone ever thought of self-help techniques. His motto was “Short-term therapy, long-term effects,” another reason he is one of my favorites.

He was bold and daring in his work, and he had a great sense of humor. Here are some songs he wrote about being crazy – actually he wrote his own lyrics to popular tunes that everyone knows.

Enjoy these songs. If you sing them, you will end up laughing.

PERFECT RATIONALITY (Tune: Luigi Denza, Funiculi, Funicula)

Some think the world must have a right direction,

And so do I, and so do I!

Some think that, with the slightest imperfection,

They can’t get by—and so do I!

For I, I have to prove I’m superhuman,

And better far than people are!

To show I have miraculous acumen—

And always rate among the Great!

Perfect, perfect rationality

Is, of course, the only thing for me!

How can I ever think of being

If I must live fallibly?

Rationality must be a perfect thing for me!

POUND, POUND, POUND! (Tune: Jingle Bells)

If you would get release and let your anger out,

Disrupt the blasted peace and scream and yell and shout,

Just go to any length to show you can’t be still,

And you’ll display enormous strength—until the time you’re killed!

Pound, pound, pound! Pound, pound, pound! Pound your enemies!

Oh what fun it is to stun anyone who does not please you!

Sock, sock, sock! Knock, knock, knock! Howl and whine and cry!

And everyone from you will run and hate you till you die!

Pout, pout, pout! Shout, shout, shout!—when things are a mess!

Rip, rip, rip! Slip, slip, slip into a profound depression!

Think, think, think! Drink, drink, drink only of cruel fate!

Keep your mind preoccupied with everyone you hate.

Whine! Whine! Whine! (Tune: Whiffenpoof Song)

I cannot have all of my wishes filled

Whine! Whine! Whine!

I cannot have every frustration stilled

Whine! Whine! Whine!

Life really owes me the things that I miss

Fate has to grant me eternal bliss

And if I must settle for less than this

Whine! Whine! Whine!

Guardian Angels: Guidance from the Unseen

angelHow My Angels Helped Me Quit Smoking

I had been in an emotional pressure cooker for two years. It began with my mother hovering between life and death after suffering a stroke and a heart attack just a few minutes apart. My husband, our 3-year-old son, and I traveled halfway across the country to be with her and help my family. While my father, an officer on a Military Sea Transport ship, was on his way home from half-way around the world, I did my best to maintain their household, which included my rebellious teen-age sister.

After many days of uncertainty, my mother began to rally, and we knew she would live. During this time, the last of the fragile threads that had been holding my marriage together snapped and my husband left my son and me, going back alone to our home and his job. When my mother was released from the hospital, my father left me in charge of her and my sister in exchange for a place to stay, and he returned to his ship.

A year later, I was grateful to have helped my mother experience a miraculous, complete recovery, and I had somehow caused my sister to remain in school and graduate, allaying my father’s fear that she would quit. Oh yes, and during this time I obtained a divorce, with some difficulty.

Now my son and I were living in an apartment near my mother’s house. I was working at night in order to be with my son during the day and was attempting to help him deal with the grief of missing his father, who had decided, against my wishes, that it would be best not to communicate with our son. I felt a great deal of stress and anxiety over this, and anger towards my husband as well.

At last, a ray of hope appeared. I found the training in metaphysics I had been seeking and was learning about guardian angels. It was comforting to know they were helping me navigate this difficult time in my life.

One More Thing

Something new was about to confront me, however, adding to my challenges. I had been a smoker for about 15 years and became aware of a thought in the back of my mind that it would be good if I quit. I managed to ignore this thought for a few weeks, but it persisted.

Finally it occurred to me that this might not be my thought. In meditation one day, I asked my angels if, indeed, they were suggesting I quit smoking. The answer was, “Yes.”

“Well,” I huffed, “I can’t do that. I have too much to contend with now, never mind quitting smoking.”

It was several weeks later that the subject arose again in meditation. This time I asked how it would benefit me to quit. The answer was that it would clear my vibration and strengthen my psychic awareness. That sounded good to me, but I had a condition.

I said, “You’ll have to help me. The process will have to be easy and painless because I can’t take any more pressure right now.” The answer was, “We will help you.”

I forgot all about quitting, and three months later I had smoked my last cigarette. I have never wanted another one, and that was 40 years ago.

The process of quitting unfolded effortlessly as I became aware of thoughts about my smoking. The reason for smoking eventually came to me. For me, it was insecurity. I found it difficult to sit down and relax. I thought I had to be busy every minute of every day, so smoking became something to do while I took a break. And it was a social ice-breaker.

As I worked out these issues, cigarettes began to taste worse and worse until one day I threw them away. I did not remember the conversation between my angels and me which started that journey until years later.

And that’s the thanks my angels got for helping me quit smoking. It’s a good thing they don’t require adulation. I’d be in a world of trouble, obtuse as I can be sometimes.

Your Angels Are Always There

Everyone has experienced the presence of a higher power at some time in their life. Sudden inspiration, an accident narrowly missed, a feeling of peace in the midst of chaos are typical experiences.

Whatever your name for this presence, it is always with you. Each of us brings a team of spiritual helpers with us when we are born. Their job is to help us live our purpose. They never tell us what to do; they wait until we ask for their assistance.

Prayer and meditation are two ways in which we communicate with our spiritual helpers. Today there are books about guardian angels. People discuss angels openly in the media. Back in the day when I was on the lecture circuit, I didn’t talk about guardian angels when I appeared in the media. Most people weren’t ready to talk about them.

No matter who you are or what you are going through, you have spiritual experts with you at all times who are waiting for you to ask for their help. If you want to connect more deeply with your guardian angels, take advantage of the resources you can find at your local book store or on the Internet. You’ll be glad you did.

I could go on and on, but this post is already a long one. I will share more about spiritual help in my next post. Meanwhile, you may want to start a deeper relationship with your guardian angels today.

Live your purpose every day.

Shift Happens

November 11, 2011: 11/11/11 symbolizes a special energy that occurs only once in every 100 years, and on this day it is three times more brilliant than at any other time.

The number 11, a Master number, represents the dreamer within us. Eleven is the energy of idealism, inspiration, innovation, invention, and excellence. It presents the opportunity to tune into your spirit, to allow your ideals to come forward and inspire you to be the best you can be.

All you cynics out there have ideals, too, and you can use this opportunity to get in touch with  them. Idealism brings forth dreams and sustains us as we act to make our dreams come true.

As we move toward the Aquarian age, Aquarius being the 11th house of the zodiac, we see manifestations of the number eleven‘s influence. All over the world people are expressing the energy of universal ideals such as freedom and equality by staging events that are changing life as we know it. This unprecedented global gathering of like-minded people has been possible because of electronic social media like Facebook.

Electricity and electronics are properties of the number 11. Presently, there are more electrically-driven vehicles on the road than ever before. Electronic innovations are being implemented daily to make our lives easier.

More and more people are reaching out to achieve excellence in service to the greater good with the expansion of green energy solutions. Electronic media have made it easier than ever before to help each other through chaotic events like the gulf oil spill and the massive earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Two stories in the news illustrate the idealism we hold deep in our hearts. An anonymous man left a bagful of cash in a restroom in Sakado, Japan, with instructions asking that it be used it to help the earthquake/tsunami victims. And the Moscow Circus contributed $1M to the Japanese tsunami fund.

Now is the time to look within, acknowledge your strengths, and expand your consciousness so you can flow with this once-in-a-lifetime energy of spiritual achievement, acceleration, and exhilaration.

Take advantage of the tremendous power of 11, and get ready to innovate new ideas and new ways of being in your life. You don’t want to be left in the dust of yesterday wondering where everybody went.

Do You Know Where You Are Going?

This is a rewrite of the original article, which I posted on Monday. My Tuesday writers group had so many insightful suggestions to make it better, I had to do it over. My thanks to them, and I hope you find it more informative than the original.

Many people are living one life and desiring another. Many people are not aware that they have a specific purpose in life. Many people are living someone else’s life instead of their own. Many compare their achievements to outer standards of success and attempt to emulate them instead of listening to their hearts.

Last week, I wrote about your Life Purpose number – the one that shows you what you were born to do with your life. This week, I’m going to talk about your Life Direction number. It’s the number that shows you how you chose to live your purpose.

Your Direction number is calculated from the numbers in your birth date. It’s easy to calculate your Direction number. To show you, I’ll use the birth date 12/24/1942.

The first step is to add each number together and reduce the sum to a single digit:

12: 1 + 2 = 3

24: 2 + 4 = 6

1942: 1 + 9 + 4 + 2 = 16; 1 + 6 = 7.

Now add the three single-digit sums together:

3 + 6 + 7 = 16: 1 + 6 = 7.

Direction number for this birth date is 7.

There isn’t enough room in a blog post to interpret all twelve Direction numbers, but you can find number interpretations on many numerology sites or you can get my book to see the interpretations and to calculate and interpret your entire chart. You can also get free numerology readings online, but none of them I’ve seen use the Chaldean method of calculation, which is the one I use and is accurate, unlike the system most numerologists use.

On the physical plane, your Direction number indicates your most fulfilling profession or lifestyle. You can use this number to guide you in choosing the right career. On a spiritual level, your Direction number reflects the talents and abilities you were born with, and they are expressed in activities you love to do.

For example, if your Direction number is 2, you like to be part of a team, you can get along with almost anyone, you can bring peace and balance into any situation, you are innately psychic, and you are sensitive to the feelings of others. Your profession could be that of a diplomat, an athlete, a member of the medical profession, a counselor, depending on the other numbers that represent your Core Qualities.

Your Direction and Purpose numbers work together to frame your life purpose. For example, using the Direction number of 2 with a Purpose number 8, which deals with physical possessions and management, managing a health-care business could be fulfilling. The 2 in combination with a purpose number of 9, the number of the humanitarian, may indicate international travel as a diplomat or a representative of a humanitarian organization as a career choice.

These number combinations are influenced by the three other numbers representing your core qualities; your Inner Self number, your Outer Self number, and your Midlife Power number, which I will talk about in future articles.

Your life purpose is reflected in the qualities, talents, and preferences that comprise your spiritual makeup, which, in turn, creates your personality. These qualities have been with you since the day you were born. They are part of your innate, subconscious knowledge, and you automatically live by their influence.

Numerology provides a formula that brings this subconscious knowledge to your conscious mind by transforming it into specific information you can easily understand and use in logical, rational ways.

Is your outer life reflecting your inner self? Are your words accurately reflecting your feelings? If so, you are living an authentic life. Pat yourself on the back because you have the commitment to follow your spirit.

If you are not satisfied with the way your life is going, you can change it. The first step is to look inside and get to know yourself. Pay attention to the things you love. If you love gardening, get more involved with it. If you love doing crafts or artwork, make time to do more. If you love taking things apart and putting them back together, follow that passion. If you love helping people, find a way to do that. Do the thing that brings you the most joy.

You are the architect of your life purpose. Deep in your heart you have the answers to all your questions. You already have everything you need to create the life you want. The clues are inside you. Follow your passions. Numerology can help you see clearly the changes you need to make.

Once you make the decision to know yourself and be who you really are, you will attract the right people to help you move forward. You will be attracted to the right information and the right situations to help you unfold your true self. All you need to do is decide.

My book, “You Were Born to Succeed: Finding Your Purpose through Numerology,” can get you started moving in the right direction. It is a powerful tool that shows you who you are, what you are doing here, and where you are going. You can sample it by clicking on the “Select Authors” image on the right.

You truly were born to succeed. Success is an inside job.

My Most Embarrassing Moment

Girl in Jeans with Cellphone

Back in the day before women had decent jeans (by decent, I mean they fit) we had girls’ jeans, which fastened on the side and had saggy seats. If you were not built like Venus, the crotch hung down to your knees.

Believe me, I was grateful to have these jeans, ugly as they were. (We didn’t know any better). I had to beg for months before my parents would consent to get them. My sister, who was built like Venus, didn’t seem to care one way or the other whether she got to wear jeans or not.

Back then, jeans were a new thing for non-farming, non-laboring lifestyles. Nobody wore jeans to school – not even boys. And girls were not allowed to wear pants of any type to school. Plus, we lived in New England, a more formal culture than others in the U.S. In spite of that, the teenagers of my generation were just beginning to make jeans a fashion statement. (Even in New England, adults never had a chance).

When I was 15, we moved to a small town in Ohio where my sister and I experienced profound culture shock. Life was much more casual. Boys wore jeans and motorcycle boots to school and girls wore jeans everywhere except to school – even to the movies. Hallelujah! Cooler than cool.

One day I noticed the jeans of one of our friends fit her perfectly and had a fly in front. When I asked her about them, she told me they were boys’ jeans and they would solve my baggy-seat problem.

Wasting no time, I began another campaign, nagging my parents endlessly to let me get boys’ jeans. It took a while, but I finally wore them down. I was elated on the day my father took me to town to get a pair of boys’ jeans. We entered a small dry-goods store and the cutest boy in the world approached us. “May I help you?” he asked. And my father said, “Yes. My son, here, wants a pair of jeans.”

I have no idea how I was able to actually proceed with the buying process and walk out of that store with my boys’ jeans. I was humiliated beyond imagination, and probably turned multiple shades of red. I know I didn’t say a word the entire time we were in there. It was a long time before I spoke to my father again, too.

Decades later I can laugh at that story and give my father credit for a good zinger, although I couldn’t do the same thing to a child of mine, especially a teen-ager. I don’t think he had any idea he was scarring me for life. But the best thing was, even though I had paid a high price for them, I wore boys’ jeans until the fashion world woke up and made the girls’ jeans we have now.
